Councillor
Paras Ramoutar wants police patrols on the Sir Solomon Hochoy
Highway between the Endeavour and Freeport flyovers.
His plea came in wake of the death of 29-year-old Nisa Samaroo,
who was knocked down by a vehicle while attempting to cross
the highway around 11 pm on Saturday.
Samaroo, a mother of three, was returning home after visiting
her parents on Yarabha Road No 2, Carlsen Field.
Ramoutar, who visited the family at their Gurahoo Trace,
Chase Village, in Central Trinidad, said a post-mortem was
expected to be done on Tuesday.
He noted that it was the second such death in as many months
in that particular area.
He called for special corrective measures aimed at minimising
further deaths.
One human being killed by murder or road is too many,
Ramoutar said.
He said the people of Carlsen Field were very poor and needed
extra care and attention, as they, too, were human beings,
and citizens of oil-rich T&T.
Ramoutar added that he had written several letters to the
ministries during the years, but nothing had been done.
Once again he called on the Ministry of Works and Transport
to construct a walkover, and at the same time urged planners
to consider such necessities when designing housing areas.
We will need the Government's assistance to underwrite
the funeral costs, because they are very poor," Ramoutar
added.
