Woman, 20, in court for child abandonment

The woman who delivered her baby in the bushes and stuffed the newborn in a discarded washing machine last week, will leave hospital in police custody.

The 20-year-old woman, who also has a two-year-old son, is expected to appear in court today, charged with child abandonment.

She faces a five-year jail term if found guilty.

The baby boy, named Joshua, will remain at the Mt Hope Hospital while a medical social worker investigates the case and recommends whether the baby will be allowed to go home to his grandmother.

The mother, who was also taken to the Eric Williams Medical Sciences Complex in Mt Hope for treatment, said she delivered her child without help in an overgrown lot near the home in Longdenville she shared with her parents and son.

The woman returned home, took a bath and left for work with a caterer contracted with the School Nutrition Programme.

It was her father, who joined a crowd when the baby was found, who took his child to the police. The woman told police she never meant for the baby to be harmed and left the child in the bush because of her mother's warning - there would be no more babies in the house.

The 53-year-old grandmother has since forgiven her daughter and said she will accept her new grandchild. But police said a criminal charge had to be laid because the newborn could easily have died. The umbilical cord was still attached to the afterbirth and the child was being bitten by ants when found.

Constable Suliman Balkaran is spearheading investigations.

Comments: Woman, 20, in court for child abandonment
Woman in Disrtress Posted: 2008-05-13 01:24:00 AM
This young woman needs serious counselling to deal with the situation she has found herself in. After being warned by her mother that should she find herself in another situation of being an 'unwanted' mother, she would not be welcomed in her home, left her little alternative based on her limited education and knowledge or maturity. When we find outselves cornered, we do unimaginable things, some we previously consider unthinkable. I know that this young woman is having a tough time dealing with the delivery and abandonment of her baby. She needs our empathy, rather than our scorn. With good counselling, and family support this young woman may be able to lead a 'normal' live and be a productive member of society. Extend some kindness.

Exactly what is going to be accomplished by locking up this woman for 5 years! The woman wanted she child and the grandmother did not. People need to show some compassion. This 20 year old went through preganancy and birth without any assistance and still have to face scrutiny by the public, all yuh good yes! Reasons why family planning should be made free for all and abortion should be legalised. Is the country messing jup its own people. Danica in London
What a sad thing Posted: 2008-05-13 06:48:00 AM
This is just disgusting on the baby mother, how could parents not tell? she lived in the same house with them, unbelievable
DEAR GRANDMA Posted: 2008-05-13 08:19:00 AM
I am so elated that you decided to accept your grandson. I understood very well where you were coming from and I know at times we have to express 'tough love' to our children when they do not listen to our warnings; but my concern was for your grandson coming of age and one day learning he was abandoned twice, by his mom and then grandmother. I recommend you seek out baby-daddy and demand assistance. Thanks for not allowing your daughter's carelessness and then selfishness, to make this innocent child another statistic. Good luck, God has certainly blessed you already. Kiya.

The purpose of the Prosecution is not to get a conviction at all cost. It's to see that Justice is done. This woman should have been diverted from the Criminal Justice System. This kind of action by the woman, needs Mental Health/Psychological intervention. This case will go down the tubes anyway.

I do hope that the courts give her a stern warning & forgive her--sad to see in this day & time that it could have resulted in an innocent tragedy! Was racism an important part played in this dilemma??? I hope not!!!!My first 'Dougla ' child was born over 40 yrs ago in T&T-have we moved on from that era?? Now my daughter has a greater mix of children with a French Canadian !!!

Didn't this grandmother say on numerous ocassions to anyone who would listen that she does not want this baby in her home, so this social worker must be loosing her mind if she recommends that this child be placed in that environment.
