“All police officers are ready and committed to ensure that Carnival 2008 is safe.”

—Acting Deputy Police Commissioner Gilbert Reyes, speaking during yesterday’s Police Service news conference.

BY GEISHA KOWLESSAR

With Carnival 2008 less than ten days away, the T&T Police Service is already anticipating a “crime-free” season.

Speaking during yesterday’s weekly media briefing at Police Administration building in Port-of-Spain, acting Deputy Commissioner Gilbert Reyes said numerous initiatives had already been implemented to deter criminals.

And the CoP has identified the “monitoring of activities” at the various prisons as one means of ensuring that “no untoward activity occurs.”

According to Reyes, police offices would be out on the streets from Carnival Friday to ensure that a “zero tolerance” attitude regarding crime is maintained.

“There will also be a heavy presence of soldiers, who will assist the police in ensuring that law and order is maintained.”

The senior cop said there would also be a heavy police presence in major areas, including:

n Port-of-Spain

n San Fernando

n Arima

n Chaguanas

“All police officers are ready and committed to ensure that Carnival 2008 is safe,” said Reyes.

He said, also, threat assessments were also done on several major fetes and other activities.

“From our analysis, there were no major instances of criminal activities.

“So far, everything seems to be going well.”

Issuing a strong warning to people bent on carrying weapons, especially during J’Ouvert, Reyes maintained that they would be “immediately dealt with by the police.”

Some initiatives implemented

n Lost and found booths for children

n Joint police/army patrols

n Increased police presence at ports of entry and exit, including Piarco and Crown Point Airports and at the Port of Port-of-Spain

n Ensuring that non-masqueraders do not enter Carnival bands.
