Warriors boosted for El Salvador friendly

Monday, March 17 2008

TRINIDAD and Tobago will be boosted by the return of talented midfielder Khaleem Hyland for Wednesday’s football friendly international against El Salvador.

Hyland, who made his debut against Puerto Rico earlier this year and also started in the 0-0 draw with Guadeloupe was doubtful after being away on trials in the United Kingdom. However, the 19-year-old midfielder, who was of interest to Celtic in Scotland, gave the assurance that he will arrive today and will be available for the match which kicks off at 7 pm at the Marvin Lee Stadium, Macoya.

Hyland is expected to be in the squad for the March 26 encounter away to Jamaica. Coming in yesterday were also Charleston Battery’s Randi Patterson and Kern Cupid. Team coach Francisco Maturana will get his first chance to look at Patterson who was with the New York Redbulls last season.

Among the experienced players in the squad are midfielder Aurtis Whitley while the new picks number College of Charleston midfielder Justin Fojo, Silas Spann, Jamal Gay and Akeem Adams.

Fojo, after his first session on Friday, said he saw his invitation at age 19 as an incentive for upcoming players hoping to represent TT at the international level.

TT assistant coach Anton Corneal said his staff was also encouraged by the 60- minute appearance by Carlos Edwards in Saturday’s Premiership clash between Sunderland and Chelsea.

Meantime, Jamaica have called up their top players for the friendly with TT in Kingston on March 26.
