Two friends die in car crash

A free-drinks nightclub lime cost two friends their lives yesterday-both dying when their car tumbled off the highway as they sped towards home in Chaguanas.

The bodies of Richard Bala, 29, a Port Authority accounts officer, and Nixon Basdeo, 28, a mechanic, were found near the wrecked car at the bottom of a precipice 100 feet from the Solomon Hochoy Highway in Gasparillo.

Both were from Cacandee Road, Felicity, Chaguanas.

Bala was his parents' only child.

His father, Reynold Bala, a Finance Ministry Treasury Department employee, said: "All we had was for him. He had everything at his disposal. Now everything has come to an end."

Basdeo had planned to build a home for his seven-month-old son, Darion.

His mother, Chandardaye Basdeo, said: "All his plans come to nothing. At 28 years it all gone. He was the only son I had."

Reynold Bala said he came home at 8 p.m. on Wednesday to find his son, a Queen's Royal College graduate, preparing to go out.

"My son was on vacation and it was his last week before he had to go back to work."

Bala said the crashed car, a newly bought Toyota Corolla, belonged to him.

"And because the car was new, we always told him to be careful. And he was being careful."

Chanardaye Basdeo said she returned from the funeral of a relative Wednesday night "and he was all dressed up to go out. I didn't ask where he was going. He was always responsible because he had a little baby to live for".

Basdeo's death caused chaos at his home, where customers turned up to tow away cars they had taken in to fix.

Richard Bala and Nixon Basdeo reportedly spent hours at a nightclub where there was an all-you-could-drink for $160 party that went on until 4 a.m.

The crashed occurred at around 3.30 a.m., off the north-bound lane of the highway and up to 9 a.m. yesterday, emergency response vehicles caused traffic to back up to San Fernando.

It's time we enforce a "last call" and bars stop selling alcohol to persons who clearly are intoxicated. How many stories have we read of persons going to free drinks parties and ending up in accidents or dead? I often wonder how these bar owners live with themselves when things like this occur. We have to protect those who can't protect themselves.

When would the nation realise that drinking and driving does not mix. Sadly it is inbreded into the culture from a young age. I would even go so far to say tht the government should pay more attention to this cause.....but I know better.

This is a sad way to go and very hard on the parents and I extend my condolences to them. I remember when I was their age and used to frequent the "all you can drink" nightclubs every weekend with by best friend. We had a rule. One week he would drink and I would drive and the following week we would switch roles. We were young, but not stupid, and had our whole lives to look forward to. Since then we have both done well in life. All the young people should know that death is permanent. You can have one hell of a good time, but show some common sense while doing it.

Some people doesn't learn any lesson about drinking and driving, it will always take lives or a live please stop and think before you take that drink, and for these bars or clubs that serve alcohol to the extent they should be persecuted for serving excess amount of alcohol to people, who they think are driving. drinking and driving is dangerous use your judgement before you act....New York

It is sad about these deaths. Friends dying like that, is truly sad. If alcohol is found to be a factor in this incident then it would appear that the men were just making sure they got their money's worth. As friends they should have been looking out for each other instead, they left everything to chance and paid the ultimate price. The family have my condolences as they they are left to face this most difficult time in their lives.

I think we in Trinidad have figured the vexing philosophical question about the meaning of life, and the answer is that it doesn't mean a damn thing.

How many have to die on the road before they enforce a "last call" at all bars & nightclubs. This is done even in England, why not here? Additionally, the "all you can drink" trend at clubs has to be closly monitored, bar & nightclub owners should be more responsible.
Drinking and Driving. Posted: 2008-07-04 11:03:00 AM
A large number of persons both young and old, drink and drive heavily. Our bodies are all different and I maybe able to consume more alcohol than another person. That doesn't mean it's ok to drink and drive. The youths of today want to live the lifestyle that is portrayed on television. The posh lifestyle. I remembered in my days of hitting free drinks parties that it was all about seeing how much alcohol we can consume and getting that nice head. We paid to go in the club so i don't know why they say it's free drinks. I believe the youths of today all have to go through these stages in life. It's very unfortunate that we have so many casualties and deaths when a good time was all it was meant to be. Club owners must be held responsible for their patrons. Pass laws. Pass that breathalyser. Have road blocks near clubs. Club owners should come together with arrive alive and implement breathalyser testing as patrons leave the clubs. Simply, are you ok to drive? Let's test. Ok your not ok to drive, your over the limit. Call a taxi and you can return for your car the next day because as it will be properly secured. R.I.P to all the good souls that we have lost.

drinking and driving. Posted: 2008-07-04 07:41:00 AM
the guy was on vacation and went out for a lime. There is nothing wrong with that plus it wasn't said that this was a cause of drunk driving, when its your time to go, you will go so you ppl don't get it twisted, i'm pretty sure if the cause of death was proven this guy was 100% totaled the headed would be. "another drunk driver death". so don't put this all on the pubs and the ppl. i for one is always at these parties and i do see that most pppl are now very aware of the dangers and being as cautious as they can so give credit to those.

Most people drink beer's etc, I myself do not, one would think that they (drinkers) would know that if your drinking don't drive.

My condolensces to the family. This is a very sad day for them. However, despite all we would like to say, we should all be held accountable for our actions. In part I agree that bartenders should not sell to individuals that are obviously intoxicated, but who's to say that these guys were not obviously intoxicated. As we trinis like to say, maybe 'they coulda whole deh liquour'. Who knows? It does not take away from the fact that we need to be accountable for our actions; we need not have individuals walking around to babysit us. I do hope that this family can heal, b/c this is a difficult time. We need to learn our limits and have designated drivers...God help us all...

Free Drinks Night Tragedy Posted: 2008-07-04 08:58:00 AM
These two young men were good boys. Please don't assume that they were drinking and driving. I know them and their families personally. It is difficult to read these comments when the contents of this article are very misleading. "A free-drinks nightclub lime cost two friends their lives yesterday-both dying when their car tumbled off the highway as they sped towards home in Chaguanas." Does it state anywhere that they were in fact drunk? The Express needs to hire qualified individuals to present the news in an unbiased way while providing accurate information. Trini in Canada
