Turf battle claims another victim

GRUESOME REALITY: Pupils walk past the body of Jamal Peters after he was gunned down at the corner of Pashley Street and Old St Joseph Road, Laventille, yesterday. -Photo: DEXTER PHILIP

JAMAL Peters, described by family and friends as a "girls man", died doing what he loved the most.

Peters, 24, better known by his alias "Pumpkin", was shot dead while talking to a female friend around 2.00 p.m. yesterday.

The busy corner of Pashley Street and Old St Joseph Road, was the scene of yesterday's killing in broad daylight. It was also the scene of other fatal shootings in recent times.

Reports are that Peters had just left a nearby grocery and was talking to a young lady at the corner, when a gunman walked up to him.

The shooter, with a gun in one hand, pulled down Peters' cap with the other and fired four shots at him, police said. Peters slumped to the ground and died on the spot and the gunman ran off.

Peters, of Buller Street, Laventille, who was before the courts facing a rape charge, was bailed out from jail last week, police said.

Investigating officers said Peters' killing, which took the toll to 362, is believed to be linked to an ongoing turf battle between warring gangs from Pashley Street and the nearby Beetham Gardens.

However, both police and residents from the area said Peters was not known to be a gang member.

They believe he was just in the wrong place at the wrong time and not the specific target of the gunman.

At the same corner around 4.30 p.m. last Friday, 23-year-old Peter Gomez, from Pump Trace, Laventille, was shot and chased while liming with a group of friends.

Gomez, who ran toward Erica Street, Rock City, Laventille, with the shooter in pursuit, died on his way to the Port of Spain General Hospital.

Investigations are continuing.

wrong place, right person Posted: 2008-09-05 03:44:00 AM
always wrong person, mistaken identity. maybe he was the right person in the wrong place.. please find out what this man did that someone felt he deserved to die before you say 'wrong person'. sorry that Trinidad has reached this state, but hey, look on the bright side, soon we'll have a new jet. Still love my T and T.

Remember that the man was facing a rape charge. It may be true to assume innocence until proven otherwise - but there may be much more to this charge.

This photo in this article is draw-dropping...not because of the crime, but, the two school girls passing by the dead body like 'whatever' wow!!! That's the attitude in T'dad now, a dead body on the street is like second nature. How sad. Trini in B'klyn
This is a shame Posted: 2008-09-05 09:02:00 AM
Why children must be subjected to this nightmare. The police could at least cover up the body so they will not be tramatized by the site of such a gruesome scene. Please consider the impact scenes like this will have on the kids.

Or maybe, redirect the pedestrain and all traffic. That area should have been considered and treated as a crime scene. I am not going to make any unprofessional evaluation regarding any course of action taken by the Trinidad and Tobago Police Service, however; policies needs to be revaluated.
