Trincity Mall swamped again
Second time in 5 days...

FOR the second time in five days, heavy rains made a big deposit at the Trincity Mall branch of RBTT yesterday.

And the water flowing in through the western entrance of the mall yesterday also flooded out the popular eye-wear retail store Raycool.

Both RBTT and Raycool, which are located opposite each other, were also adversely affected by Saturday's heavy showers that ravaged the East-West Corridor.

RBTT was not opened on the first day of flooding but customers were also unable to use the automated teller machines (ATM) because the ground floor of the mall was flooded.

But yesterday's waters rushed in during working hours and the bank was forced to close for almost three hours so clean-up operations could be completed.

There were approximately 20 customers inside the bank when the mid-morning waters arrived. The bank was forced to close from 11.45 a.m. to 1.30 p.m.

However, Raycool was not spared from either of the two days of disruptions. They closed early on Saturday and also lost several customer hours yesterday.

An employee of Raycool, who requested anonymity, said the entire situation was "very frustrating". She also lamented the fact that despite them being paying tenants of the mall, they had to foot the bill for the cleaning. When the Express visited the mall yesterday, there were two supersoppers- the large sponge covered roller machines used to soak up excess water- cleaning the corridor between the two flood-affected businesses, along with several sandbags on the floor. While inside the bank, a cleaning crew from Century 21 were hard at work.

Employees from both businesses have blamed the flooding on the mall's expansion, which they claimed covered a previous underground water passage. However, despite losing valuable customer hours, the two businesses did not lose any merchandise or equipment, the employees said.

Floodplain... Posted: 2008-08-27 9:00:00 PM
If we live and do business in the floodplains of our waterways and simultaneously cut down our forests, especially in those in the hills and mountains, expect to be saddled with such great floods and the pain of loss. Have we looked at the problems in Haiti? When your neighbour's house is on fire, wet yours...but this situation is a little too wet.
CONSTRUCTION Posted: 2008-08-28 02:39:00 AM
This is what happens when construction is not done properly. This happens whet infrastructure, and environmental affects are not studied. The global warming idiots should study the needless flooding before they worry about socialist propaganda.

HDC and its lack of security for paying patrons. This is just the beginning. What goes around comes around and Jah don't sleep.
Flooding in the mall Posted: 2008-08-28 04:00:00 AM
It will always occur. The low end of the gradient for the parking lot is towards the entrance of the mall. Great thinkers and designers we have. Don't you agree? In Trinidad, your decision to to shop ought to be based on the clouds overhead.
Haphazard Construction is a crime Posted: 2008-08-28 04:44:00 AM
Those tenants at Trincity Mall should stop being (literally) sitting ducks. They shoudl contact Mr. Winston Riley of the JCC. And ask him if an independent study can be done. To investigate, if this water course which was 'covered up' by Trincity Mall's expansion indeed caused the Western-end flooding. Also let HCL know they want this investigated. O/wise, it shall happen again. There are far too many b usiness people, and the PNM-government as a chief culprit, rushing to BUILD, BUILD & make $$$. But not enough care is taken from Engineering & Environmental standpoints, to ensure that best practice is used. The result, 'Tird World' accidents & disasters which need not happen in the 1st place. As for the owners of Ray Cool, the Mall is responsible for that cleaning, not you. By by now, you should know your basic rights. Check your lease. J. W-Schmidhammer, Maracas Valley

Trincity Mall Swamped Again Posted: 2008-08-28 10:37:00 AM
In the novel "Coin of Gold" by Linda E. Edwards, published in 2001, the author wrote of these scenes with prophetic vision. Copies are in every library in TnT. When we ignore the floodplain and build at will, the water takes back its own. An aerial view above the Caroni Plain would show that that area is unsuited for the sorts of things we are putting there, UNLESS we build massive dams to hold back the water, and floodgates to keep the tide out. Even the drowning of the poultry is in that book. Eerie. Check for yourself and see.

The bank shouldn't complain. That's the time they take lunch anyway.

Good thing is a million dollar "private" project
Trincity Flooding Posted: 2008-08-28 12:16:00 AM
We were warned many years ago by people like Professor Julian Kenny and others that if we continue to cut down the forests and build indiscriminately in the valleys and on the hills, the chaos that we are seeing today will be the end result. I am sorry for those who are experiencing the pain of flooding, but Gov't and Town and Country Planning must do more to control greedy developers and squatter farmers.
