T&T to face Guyana in warm-up
Yorke, other pros arrive today

Local fans will get a double dose of international football warm-ups tomorrow following the Trinidad and Tobago Football Federation's move to card a doubleheader at the Hasely Crawford Stadium.

With the main focus being Saturday's 2010 World Cup qualifying fixture against Guatemala, the T&T senior team will continue their preparations for that encounter with a training match against Guyana's national senior side from 5:30 pm. And from 7:30 pm, the national Under-20 team will face El Salvador's under-20s at the same venue. Admission is $50 anywhere.

The T&T vs El Salvador encounter, initially carded for today at the Marvin Lee Stadium, will not be played as scheduled.

The senior team resumed training at the Mucurapo venue yesterday and will move into a live-in camp at the Crowne Plaza today. The full squad, minus Joe Public's Keyeno Thomas and Kerry Baptiste (away on Concacaf Champions League duty) but inclusive of the overseas professionals, will assemble today. That list includes Swansea City duo Dennis Lawrence and Jason Scotland, Sunderland midfielder Carlos Edwards, Hungary-based goalkeeper Jan Michael Williams and US-based defenders Avery John and Julius James. Former national captain Dwight Yorke has also confirmed his availability for the upcoming World Cup qualifiers beginning with Saturday's fixture against the Guatemalans who arrive in Port of Spain on Thursday. The Sunderland midfielder will also join the team today.

Baptiste and Thomas will return home tomorrow.

Defence Force defender Aklie Edwards is also in the squad and will be eligible for action in the qualifiers having completed a four-match suspension for a red card offence in an Olympic qualifier against Cuba earlier this year.

Among the other home-based pros included are midfielder Keon Daniel, the double goalscorer against Cuba as well as Densill Theobald, Cornell Glen, Cyd Gray, Anthony Wolfe, Andre Toussaint Clyde Leon and goalkeeper Marvin Phillip.

Striker Cornell Glen says T&T will not be complacent against Guatemala, particularly when one looks back at the past two qualifiers. Guatemala were handsome 5-1 winners in Guatemala City before a late Stern John double gave T&T a come-from-behind 3-2 win at the Hasely Crawford Stadium on the final stretch to Germany 2006.

"I feel we are coming on stronger as a team after the last two matches (against El Salvador and Cuba) but at the same time, Guatemala is a team that can really come good on their day, so we cannot take them lightly.

"We never go out there to take any team lightly but for this game as it is. I think we need to go all out to get three points. It is really important for us to take all our points in the first home game," Glen told TTFF Media.

"Personally I am hoping to keep up my form and make whatever contribution that will benefit the team. All the guys are really starting to understand their positions and what the coach wants from them but more time will help us. We have to be on point and try to push forward and take our chances like we did in the last two games," added the ex-LA Galaxy front man.

T&T currently sit atop the four-team group ahead of the Americans on goal difference. But Bob Bradley's team is keen to change that situation. Bradley has named a 22-man roster for his team's match against Cuba on Saturday and against T&T on September 10 in Chicago.

"These next two games are very important to help us position ourselves to advance to the final stage," said Bradley.

"With the win against Guatemala, we have put ourselves in a good situation at the start of the semi-final round. I was very pleased with the way our team stuck together in a difficult environment. We need to have that same type of effort in the matches against Cuba and Trinidad and Tobago."

Many of the usual suspects are included in Bradley's roster, including 16 of the 20 players called in for the Guatemala game, led by captain Carlos Bocanegra, who scored the winning goal.

In a further indication that youth will continue to be served under Bob Bradley, six players from the Olympic team have been summoned, including increasing regular members Sacha Kljestan, Maurice Edu, and Michael Bradley.

Okay coach way yuh? Help me understand the benefit of playing Guyana and calling it a warm-up match? Allyuh aware of the poor state Guyana football in? Unless of course yuh giving instructions that the Warriors have to score a certain number of goals else is endless laps for the team afterwards.
v Guyana... (again???) Posted: 2008-09-02 02:09:00 AM
yuh think after playing them twice already for the year that we would push the boat out and get Bolivia or Peru or Ecuador over or a friendly... (and a higher calibre opponent)? Come on T&T... LondonTrini is resting after Nottinghill papayo... niceness!
Skill VS Physical Posted: 2008-09-02 08:31:00 AM
I was at the El Salvador game, for one thing when you guys throwing punches on the field, remember it was 1000 Salvadoor to 1 Trinbagonian there :), But we made the most noise :). It was awesome being at the game and a lot of fun. I want to say our game is still very physical and we do need some of that, however, this new generation is all about skills, footwork’s and we are getting left behind. We made some progress coming up to the world cup. We had stop kicking the ball up field to the other team and was advancing and support the attack as a group, allowing us to keep possession longer and putting the other defense on their heels. When we warm-up we do it like a training session, not to get the players mind going and used to footwork’s. El Salvador was by far the better skilled team, we were faster, but before the half our players was walking, bent over with hands on hips. I coach soccer and the younger players in USA are working on footwork’s, a lot of skill else they will be left behind. We need to start looking at Coerver methods and teach our young players from 6, 8,9,10 years old these footwork’s. With that and our speed, in the next 8-10 years we will be right there with the best of them. We are getting the desire and becoming more professional for a party, fun, enjoying the sun island :).Keep working and we will get back to the big dance. Trini, MD
Warm up game Posted: 2008-09-02 11:37:00 AM
Why are we playing a warmup vs. Guyana days before a qualifier? A 22 man squad was named..why not just play a intra-squad scrimmage and call it a day? Playing Guyana only heightens the opportunity for injury.
