Power performance: Reigning Power Soca Monarch Iwer George commands his fans at the Soca in b Square concert, Woodford Square, Port-of-Spain yesterday...
Soca legend Austin “SuperBlue” Lyons, yesterday failed to make it on stage as a surprise guest artiste on the performing line up in bmobile’s free lunch time concert, “Soca in b Square”, at Woodford Square in Port-of-Spain.
Roy Cape All Stars accompanied by Blaxx, Olatunji Yearwood and Trini Jacobs were the main attraction at the concert.
Blaxx, who topped the International Power Soca Monarch semi-finals last Sunday, had the near capacity crowd totally breathless after first performing crowd favourite “Dutty”, his 2007 hit, and this year’s Road March contender “Breathless.”
After their well-appreciated performance an announcement was made that a special guest artiste was about to come on stage. However, Blaxx was forced to continue with his performance much to the delight of the crowd after word was received that the artiste had not yet arrived.
Reigning Power Soca Monarch champion Neil Iwer George then made an impromptu appearance performing his 2008 Soca Monarch contribution “Over Yuh Head” and last year’s mega hit “Fete after Fete.”
The concert ended with one last performance from Blaxx who gave a encore performance of “Breathless”. However, it was later learnt that Super Blue, who was seen backstage dressed in his trademark blue outfit and bandanna, was the surprise guest artiste but had reportedly arrived late for the concert.
Newsday received conflicting reports as to the reasons Super Blue was omitted from the line up. One report indicated that Super Blue had arrived late and therefore could not be accommodated on stage while other reports revealed that the artiste was, in fact, on time but was waiting in a car to be called on stage to perform.
Questioned as to whether he was scheduled to perform, Super Blue responded, “I was supposed to.” When asked if he was upset over the incident, with a fixed face, he replied, “No”.
An official told Newsday: “We were waiting for a guest artiste to arrive but he showed up at 1 pm.” The official added that “Iwer George had to fill in for him.” He, however, denied that Super Blue was upset over the incident.
