Some food taxes to go in 3 weeks

IN ABOUT three weeks the reduction and removal of the Common External Tariff (CET) from several imported food items by this country, which should result in lower food prices for consumers on a number of products, is set to be implemented.

Trade Ministry communications specialist Tanya Carr reported that the Trade Division was currently in a consultative process regarding the CET, to ensure that no local industries or production was hurt by its removal on produce.

She noted that the purpose of the CET was to protect regional industries, and whenever it was adjusted it must be ensured that no domestic industries are harmed.

Carr reported that the Trade Division had consulted with the Trinidad and Tobago Manufacturers Association and the various local chambers of industry and commerce, and was currently liaising with Agriculture Minister Arnold Piggott.

She added that the CET adjustments would then be taken to the chief parliamentary council and then legislated.

Among the products which consumer can expect a price reduction are herrings, sardines, tuna, chilled lamb, frozen/salted/brine beef, teas of all kinds, mackerel, baking powder, sunflower oil, soups and broths, active yeasts, canned corned beef, salted butter, condensed milk, red beans, cheddar cheese, lentils, baby formula and juices for infant preparation.

Yeah right, food taxes will go in three weeks, but greedy retailers will ensure that these savings do not trickle down to the public, but rather in their own pockets
Stupid reductions Posted: 2008-05-13 11:00:00 AM
What sort of crap reductions are those. Reduce real items on the poor man's grocery list that are needful: flour, locally grown vegeatables and fruits, UHT milk, canned meats and all dry peas, rice, etc. Free tax on baby formula.. Mothers should breastfeed and the govt should support that!!

Rather than put exorbitant amount of taxes on foods, the gov't should be looking at applying further taxes on the price of fuel. By applying gas taxes, the gov't could help subsidize food taxes as well as help the environment. I mean that if the price of fuel is up, then those old, gas guzzling, emission poor vehicles would be left off the road and give us a chance to breathe some cleaner air.
Cheap Posted: 2008-05-13 1:58:00 PM
so you getting baking powder cheap? Whapen to the flour and the Rice, our main concern? Waiting for this price reduction... the government will announce it.. but groceries will not adhere to it... I have seen it happen and there will be no change.. and when it is reported to consumer affairs they do nothing.!
