Soldiers under investigationBy ONIKA JAMES Wednesday, March 26 2008
AN INVESTIGATION has been launched into allegations made by a woman against two soldiers at Camp Ogden. Commanding Officer of the Trinidad and Tobago Regiment Colonel Roland Maundy, is expected to hold a meeting with his officers, to discuss the allegation made against the two soldiers.
Last Thursday, a 25-year-old woman, went to the St James Police Station and reported that she was sexually assaulted during the early hours of the morning by two armed men dressed in army attire on the compound of Camp Ogden.
The shaken woman claimed she made arrangements to meet a soldier at the camp at about midnight last Wednesday. She told police she was able to gain entry through the nearby Crematorium, then through a shortcut to the army base on Long Circular Road, St James.
According to reports, the alleged victim said she met the soldier who asked her to wait for him because he had to run an errand. The woman reported that shortly after midnight, while waiting on the soldier, she was approached by two men she dressed in military uniforms and armed with guns.
She claimed that she was raped at gunpoint by one of the men while the other forced her to carry out an indecent act. Newsday learnt that the victim bore no marks of violence on her body and her clothes were intact.
However, sources said she was visibly traumatised when she went to the police station to make the report.
Following the report police officers immediately took her to a medical facility where a doctor confirmed that she was raped. Newsday has also learnt that over the Easter weekend Col Maundy ordered an immediate investigation into the alleged assault.
Col Maundy is expected to meet with several officers including the Public Relations Officer for the Regiment, Cpl Maynard Brassy to discuss the issue, sometime this week.
Cpl Brassy was yesterday reluctant to speak on the issue but admitted that “the issue is high on the agenda of Col Maundy and he is awaiting a report on the matter. If there is any information we can release to the public we will in due course.” Cpl Brassy also assured that if there was any wrong doing it would be dealt with.
