Relatives: Help us find Vijay

Fire scene: Investigators look for evidence at the gutted home of the Persad family at Moruga Road, Princes Town, yesterday. Inset: Kimraj Persad, brother of Ragkumar. -Photos: DAVE PERSAD

There are people who know where to find the remains of kidnapped Vijay Persad, and now that his family is dead, a final plea is being made for information that will bring him home in time for a funeral for all five.

Vijay was ten years old when he was snatched by two men who went to rob his father's mini-mart in June 2004. Three days later, a $500,000 ransom demand was made. The kidnappers never called again, and despite the detention of 16 people and an offer of a $20,000 reward, the boy was never seen by his parents again.

In the early hours of last Saturday, a fire destroyed Vijay's home at Moruga Road, Indian Walk, killing his father, Ragkumar, 49, mother Marilyn Persad, 48, brother Sanjay, 13, and sister Aryanna, six.

Vijay's uncle, Kimraj Persad, said yesterday of the missing boy: "I am appealing to the people out there. The family is gone. Please help us find Vijay and give us closure."

Kimraj Persad said he believes Vijay was killed by his abductors and left to rot somewhere in the expanse of forest in Moruga.

Another of Vijay's uncles, Dhanpat Persad, said of the four-year mystery: :We will be glad if we can get Vijay's remains and put this to rest."

Relatives have dismissed suggestions that the Persads were victims of a murder-suicide at the weekend.

Homicide crime scene and fire service investigators spent hours at the ruins yesterday, looking for clues on how the fire started.

A witness said the flames first came from an area in which Persad slept. In that room, was a deya that remained lit all night, his brother Kimraj said. His wife and children slept in adjoining rooms.

The flames that tore through the old wooden house were too intense for neighbours to attempt a rescue. Fire-fighters met a series of steel doors, burglar proofing and fences they could not get past. The bodies were found on or close to the bed frames.

So little of the Persads remained that they might all fit into one casket at the funeral to be held at Kimraj Persad's home at St Julien Village, Princes Town.

Autopsies of the bodies may not help police solve the case. The pathologist yesterday found that the four died from toxic smoke inhalation, which meant the smoke got to them before the flames.

School friends of Aryanna and Sanjay Persad will attend the funeral. At the Robert Village Hindu School in Tableland where Aryanna was a first standard pupil, a prayer service was held yesterday.

Aryanna, Sanjay and Vijay all attended the primary school and according to a teacher, "all were brilliant, well-disciplined, and the most perfect children anyone could ask for". The school intends to hold prayer meetings all week for the family.

At the Barrackpore Secondary School where Sanjay was in form one, pupils yesterday donated their lunch money to help the only member of the family who survived-18-year-old Nirmala Persad, who turned 18 yesterday.

If you have information on Vijay's whereabouts, please call 800-tips, the Princes Town police at 655-7330 or the San Fernando Homicide Bureau at 652-0495.

So Sad Posted: 2008-10-06 7:15:00 PM
This story of Vijay missing broke my heart 2 years ago and now that the family has died, it is really painful -such misfortune and so much sadness for them. Life can be so difficult sometimes.
SAD Turn of events Posted: 2008-10-07 08:14:00 AM
I cannot believe that the whole family was killed by the fire. It does lead one to think of how the fire started, however who can truely understand how their lives have been since the kidnapping of their child. May GOD give them all a resting place.
Very sad Posted: 2008-10-07 06:20:00 AM
Very sad and distressing news. Seems like just yesterday Vijay was snatched, and 4 years after his family is now gone. Talk about being dealt a bad hand. However, the family may now be at peace, since worrying for every minute of every day about whether your kidnapped 14 yr old son/brother is dead or alive is not much of a life anyway.

Someone out there must know what has happened to Vijay. Whosoever you're if you truly know we're pleading with you to have a HEART and please, please help this family to move on with their lives by telling them where he is. If he is dead it's ok too,his remaind could be laid to rest with the rest of his famil and his Sister can start to move on with the help of her husband and daughter.I cannot begin to imagine what she is going through and she is only 18 years old. Please i beg you help her. May they all rest in peace.
Terrible story...lets have some closure Posted: 2008-10-07 11:27:00 AM
I have followed this news story on the trinidad express website for a long time. It is very distressing to to hear how the family have ended up after such a tragedy. Let's have some closure to this very sad story so any remaining family and friends can put it behind them and move on.
Help us find Vijay Posted: 2008-10-07 10:30:00 AM
This is one of the most heart-breaking story I've witness in a long time. It is time to at least give this family closure as to where are the remains of Vijay. How could one family be so unlucky. I am so torn up about this tragedy. This store is over 100 yrs old. I've shopped at that store since paradise plum was for a penny, and here I am witnessing this tragic event. I went to the same High School as 'Denis.' We of the Indian Walk community would like to see this case solved. This toxic smoke inhalation is not cutting it; this is not enough. We want to know that the Forensic Science in fire destruction leaves no stone unturned. We want also justice for Vijay. My condolences to Byo, Johnny, Mukesh, Bucky and Susan.
Condolences Posted: 2008-10-07 10:48:00 AM
This seems so mysterious, but GOD's ways are a mystery. May GOD give us the wisdom and understanding to comprehend this situation. Only GOD knows. This is so very sad. My condolences to all. Rest in peace beautiful family. Rest in peace. To the surviving daughter: GOD never gives us more than we can bear. Hold on to the words of the prophet.
