PLAYING FOR PRIDE
Gayle, Windies authorities at odds ahead of 4th ODI

CHRIS GAYLE doesn't appear to be singing from the same hymn sheet as West Indian cricket authorities.

On the eve of the fourth Digicel One-Day International against Australia, the West Indies captain was off key and seemed to be in the dark on pertinent issues.

He was under the impression the squad assembled here for the two matches at Warner Park would have comprised 14 players and not 13.

He was also at odds with the policies of the selectors throughout the season.

"Based on the selection committee, there are some things I don't have much control over at this point in time, regardless I'm the captain or not," Gayle said.

"The majority of the time we discuss about selection and sometimes I get something totally different. It's difficult on my side."

After losing the first three matches, the selectors made a couple of changes from the 14-man squad that played in St Vincent and Grenada.

They brought in three new inexperienced players--Kemar Roach, Shawn Findlay and Nikita Miller and omitted four --Patrick Browne, Sulieman Benn, Kieron Pollard and the injured Jerome Taylor.

While not disclosing who was identified as the 14th player, Gayle revealed that uncapped teenaged Nevisian Kieran Powell had featured in the selectors' discussions.

"We only have 13 in the squad at this particular time when there should be 14. I don't know the reason behind that. A 14-man squad was selected," Gayle said.

"A lot of things are happening and I don't know about. It's difficult in my situation. Things need to be put in place a bit more and focus on the cricket as well.

"Two names that we discussed in the 14 are not here. No one has come back to see and said anything. It is disappointing as captain. These are the things you have to deal with."

It also came to light that Gayle wasn't in totally agreement with the selectors' policies over the past few weeks.

As far as he was concerned, it was not a time to be experimenting, something he made known to those in charge before the series.

"Do you really want to really experiment with a team like Australia? If that is the case, it is going to be more difficult to beat them," he said.

"I thought it was the wrong time to try these things, to experiment a lot. It was the totally wrong time to do that...[we should be] actually trying to look for your best team rather than giving guys an opportunity. We should be looking to win the series, but it's already gone."

In response to telling revelations from West Indies Cricket Board (WICB) president Julian Hunte that West Indies could be relegated to a second division international team, Gayle somewhat left it outside the off stump.

A response, he added, should be sought from West Indies Players Association (WIPA) president and chief executive officer Dinanath Ramnarine.

"It's no secret. Regardless of what the president says, we know we need to improve our cricket. We need to go out there and show what we are made of and stop messing around," Gayle said.,

"What the president has said...understand my situation at this particular point in time. You can ask Ramnarine about it. He will give you a better answer on that side. Right now the focus is to give the fans something to cheer about."

West Indies find themselves in the all too familiar position of trying to salvage pride at the end of a series.

Having virtually been absent from the first three matches, they have the last two to try and avoid a whitewash against the world No. 1 team.

"We've had a chat about it. We've discussed the situation we are in. Everybody from the outside saw what is going on," Gayle said.

"We are still playing for pride. We want to win these two games and give the fans something to cheer about. We are looking forward to it."

Now you realize how the Lara was feeling. Oh, and by the way, you see how much class Lara has. Read his statement after he received the Caricom award.
