Oxygen therapy for EdwardsSaturday, February 9 2008
TYNE AND WEAR: Despite scans showing his leg has completely healed, Sunderland’s Trinidadian international Carlos Edwards will undergo oxygen tent treatment to continue his rehabilitation.
The 29-year old Edwards suffered a broken leg last December in Sunderland’s 1-0 win over Derby, and is yet to return to action for the struggling north-east England team.
While tests have shown that the injury has mended, Edwards is reportedly not feeling 100 per cent and is expected to travel to London for further therapy.
“When you have injury problems like we have, there is always a temptation to bring players back early,” Sunderland manager Roy Keane said.
“We saw, though, what happened with Kieran Richardson last week and we do not want that to happen again.
“As for Carlos, he is in London to spend some time in an oxygen tent to help his recovery.”
Edwards completed a 1.5 million pounds sterling move to Sunder-land in January last year on a three-and-a-half-year contract.
A pacy winger who brings width to Sunderland’s attack, his absence has been a big loss to the team as they struggle to survive relegation from the Premiership.
Keane said he would tread cautiously with Edwards’ fitness.
“Next week he is going to see someone I know in Paris about the injury. The scan shows the fracture has healed but he is not 100 per cent happy with it,” Keane revealed.
“It is about making sure he is confident he is fully fit before he can start playing again. I would not expect him to be right for two weeks.” (CMC)
