MURDER RAP
Philbert launches probe into violent Internet video

BAD BOYS: Scenes from the YouTube video in which several men threaten violence against police and a slain gangster.

Acting Police Commissioner James Philbert has launched an investigation into the individuals appearing in a locally produced music video currently circulating on YouTube, which contains threats against the lives of police officers and a recently murdered gang leader.

"I have just looked at the video and we are in the process of identifying the area," Philbert said yesterday.

Confirming it is in fact the St Barb's Police Post in the video background, Philbert said pictures of the men will be distributed to various police stations.

"It is a cause for concern, we are seeing the guns and hearing what appears to be gunshots. This just goes to show these men believe that the best way to depict their lawlessness is through song," Philbert said.

The video, which appears to have been shot in Laventille, features the voices of young men "freestyling" (composing lyrics on the spur of the moment) about "killing babylon". Babylon is a Jamaican term used to describe police officers. The video also showcases 9 mm pistols and explicit lyrics and the echoing of gunshots.

The singers make mention of executed gang leader Merlin "Cudjoe" Allamby, where they state Allamby "have to dead", since he has "sold out the youths" to law enforcement officers.

Allamby, 35, of San Juan, was shot dead on July 22 while visiting a murder scene. No one has been held for the killing.

A few seconds into the video, a man is positioned a short distance from the St Barb's Police Post, where, when singing the chorus: "....Cudjoe and Babylon dem know dey have to dead, dem sell out de youths them to the feds...", he points to the St Barb's post.

Boasting about being a gunshot survivor, one of the singers sang that other communities who seek war need to think twice, since several of their gang members are incarcerated. The singer further notes that members of his gang are nursing injuries-one of whom is shown as having his hand in cast.

"I got kids on my team with one hand in a cast, got a Tech in the next and they ain't scared to blast..." the singer adds.

The singer also boasts that even a newspaper (not the Express) glorifies the actions of gangs by referring to his gang and his leadership as being "veterans".

Throughout the freestyling, a masked man, armed with a 9 mm pistol, is seen pointing the firearm towards the camera, whilst dancing.

The video has been viewed over 14,000 times and the majority of comments have been negative.

Commenting on the video, Secretary of the Police Social and Welfare Association Neil Warner-Paul said the association was also concerned about the lyrics, since they "seem to be inciting violence aimed at police officers".

Saying laws should be implemented to ban lyrics which promote such violence, Warner-Paul said it appears as though Trinidad is following in the footsteps of some Jamaican artistes who openly preach violence against law-abiding citizens and law enforcement officers.

"What is even more frightening is that they (singers in the video) are holding what appears to be authentic firearms," Warner-Paul said.

The association, he said, is once again renewing its call for officers to be careful whilst on and off duty. However, Warner-Paul said the lyrics voiced in the video should not be taken for granted.

Lyrics

Mr. Philbert don't be surprised that these gangster rappers have the real guns on them -- why don't see that your men need to have their guns as well to protect themselves and families as well. Anyone can work out the maths here -- give the Police Officers of whom you are so concerned their personal firearms and forget the ole talk that is so prevalent. What next Mr. Security Minister?
Murder rap Posted: 2008-08-25 11:26:00 PM
This is just to show the state the country has reached when these fools making videos abt killing Police and showing Guns in the video and what is the Government going to do about this...NOTHING. It's high time the Government stop playing Politics with the people especilly the Police Service and give the officers the permission to Kill these guys because they are no use to the society, only causing grief and heartache for families. I am not concerned about who may be upset at my response but it's high time that we do something to stop the madness that's going on. You study votes and not the safety of the citizens

Why do we Trinis always copycat other peoples culture? I feel so sick seeing these youths destructive behaviour. It happens in America to,but Trinis who comes to T andT on vacation,I am sure would not mention it.

murder rap Posted: 2008-08-25 8:55:00 PM
Now I hope the cops get the message. These young thugs are not afraid to kill people so don't be afraid to get rid of them. Like I always say the grannies will cry and say he was a good boy but won't say he was a menace to society. I hope the cops identify the punks and the area where they are to finish them off. The lyrics do not sound like Trini so check out those small islanders who think Trinis are afraid of them.
Sad just sad... Posted: 2008-08-26 01:13:00 AM
Just think about it without the gun their nothing, and Mr philbert you dont have to login to you tube to hear and see this type of filth, this is being sold on our streets by elligal music vendors with noisebox carts and being aired on tempo and BET,so what is the point in blocking one video?.

This is another example of the products creeated by the junior secondary school shift system and the lack of parental guidance and supervision at home. How sad that these idiots are going to comprise the next generation on Trinbagoians how very very sad.

Its incredible in a country with so much oppotunities for young men and woman anytime they choose, that is the only direction they point for themselves.Mr Philbert I know you are probably saying the same thing. We here in Trinidad have a good record to date educating our young people, then how is this situation possible. My family and friends have you and our police officers in prayer.God can move many obstacles including crime, hate, filth in our society, corruption and youth gone insane with violence in our beautiful land of Trinidad and Tobago.

find them, jail them,no mercy for them, isolation while in detention, they make everyone in this nation want to run, they feel they strong because of the gun, the law of the land more badder than any man, don't treat them like juveniles, even with tears in their eyes, give them the catonine, till they go blind. they have no mercy for life, no matter husband child or wife. with all seriousness the laws should be amended, remember when a kaisonian sings a smut, what happens. and youtube should be sued for aiding and abetting them.

Ladies and Gentlemen, I think it is also the responsibility of the Media to consider the consequences of their actions. Giving these idiots press time is just what they wanted. We have to remember that we have tens of thousands of very impressionable youths, who may see these miscreants as role models. In the absence of any apparent Great Leaders or Outstanding Role Models (Thompson excepted) we may have to accentuate the positive and eliminate the negative! It's not all about selling Newspapers or advertising time on TV. Certant Omnes.
Murder rap Posted: 2008-08-26 06:40:00 AM
This article is disgusting and shows the height to which criminality has ascended in T'dad. Recently 52 murderers had their death penalty commuted to life in prison. Wait they will soon be saying that is unjust, and they should be paroled, thr fact that they have shed blood, is irrelevant, and this nonsense continues, criminals given legitmacy. It is for this very reason these evil gits can make this show knowing that the law is useless. When is the hangman noose going to be in operation. When Ramesh put Dole Chadee gang, it didn't matter about Amnesty or anyone else, why now with this rampant lawlessness, government lethargy and to be truthful indifference, my heart grieves for my nation. As for following the pattern of Jamaica, what poor taste, it shows people of little intelligence, why not follow the good examples of that country. I pray before they kill any policeman, they lay them low. Send in the Army.
Too much publicity Posted: 2008-08-26 07:09:00 AM
Why are we always giving these Thugs all this publicity. Its almost like they are being rewarded for their violent actions. I am sure they will be proud to know that thier garbage made it to the papers. Just pick up the Express and sing along with the chorus

Video goes mainstream. Nothing is going to be done. These guys are not scared of the law. Trinidad govt should all resign. The state of crime has reached unpresented levels. Citizens are scared and nothing is being done. This is only the first video. If you go watch the video you will be patronizing the criminal elements. I only hope we all don't get caught up watching this video. If we do more will come and Tnt Negative name will flourish on the biggest video website in the world. Investors will see us as criminals and if you think the economy is bad now, wait till the other thugs see how these guys are getting their internet fame, many other videos will come.

Murder Rap Posted: 2008-08-26 03:03:00 AM
What is the title to this video on youtube.com? This is the kind of arrogance that can be displayed by criminals in Trinidad. They have no fear of conequences, no boundries to their behavior because they are free to operate above the law and can be assured that they will not pay for their criminal behavior. How does the average citizen cope with these types of predatory characters? The government seemingly can't control them and they know it and the average citizen does not have the means to fend them off. The government needs to legalize firearms and issue them to law abiding citizens, otherwise we are just sitting ducks awaiting the arrival of these criminal types. The government is either intent or incapable of doing anything about them. The murder rate at the end of August will clearly show that the government is incapable or incompetent in addressing any crime in Trinidad. In Trinidad the murder statistic seems to be the on statistical guidepost tat however, we pay attention to, however, that are other occurances of crime like theft, robberies, autotheft, etc, etc. that are happening in the same uncontrollable way as the killings. Lief in Paradise...Just beautiful!!!
MURDER RAP Posted: 2008-08-26 07:40:00 AM
They're "rapping" now. Haven't you seen those underworld rap videos. This speaks volumes about the influence of foreign cultures on the youths in TnT. Maybe Dr. Nantambu was right about "Euro-American Recolonization". We need to reclaim our youths TnT.

I applaud Mr. Philbert for his initiative, however doe the Police Service had the technology to enhance the images of these thugs and remove the from the street? The one in the green cap should be easily identified and apprehended. If you lean on him hard enough you should be able to break him . Good Luck sir. P.S. the City of West Palm Beach had a similar incident about six month ago, you might consider contacting Chief Bush for assistance in this matter. Concern Trini West Palm Beach Florida
Absolute Madness Posted: 2008-08-26 08:11:00 AM
This is absolute madness, in this place where chaos, lawlessness and absolute self indulgence prevails. There is nothing the politicans can do to stop this plague. As a young citizen, this crime, gross disrespect for life and law has to come to an end with us as the next generation. No Prime Minister, no President, no National security Minister is capable of bringing an end to this. We as young people have to open our eyes and our hearts and stop sleep walking, All of us who prefer to live in the diaspora as I have for many years and not return home because you think you are better of that way, I urge you to think about it. Trinidad and Tobago needs us. We are the future here. These young men and women are crying out for love and attention. Each time I view these types of articles it makes me think about City of God. 1.3 million people is not hard to manage, but everybody wants to make a million dollars for themselves, live lavish lifestyles and is more concerned about who can see them than what is happening in our country. You people wake up we have to have a revolution of ideas. We can do it.

Where are we going or should I say where are we at as a society. My God what are we teaching the youths of the world. I hope those in authority act on this expeditiously. Dont claim to know who the perpetrators are and they arent arrested. You have all the information you need now to get these criminals of the streets in a bid to start the cleaning process and healing as well. Make an example of these and we will be better off. We Must Continue to PRAY. GOD IS THE ONLY ANSWER...

Trinidad gone to the dogs Posted: 2008-08-26 09:18:00 AM
Trinidad is not a safe place and the way things are going it looks like it will never be a safe place. This morning i was going to work and in broad daylight 7.45 am on the highway waiting to cross to go to work a male of african decent walked up to me flashed what appeared to be a 9.mm automatic pistol. He told me to hand over my belongings otherwise he would shoot me dead on the highway.i handed over my gold band and ring and he just casually walked off. This freak is of african decent, about 5,4 and was wearing a blue jersey and black 3/4 jeans. Why is it that the hard working people have to give up what they worked hard for and these lawless freaks have to enjoy the benefits of of another man sweat, blood and tears. this is why when i see this video it realy upsets me. The way they talk about the police, law abiding citizenz and people of indian decent is just apauling. what is also bad is that these freaks boasts about what they have done as if it is some great accomplishment in life. all that i have to say to these people is "what goes around comes around".and it is jus a matter of time before those same guns are turned back to them.

gangster rap, freed death row inmates Posted: 2008-08-26 09:25:00 AM
This is a clear case of the deliquent people, that call thenselves community leaders and the anointment by this government to these criminals. I just hope that the Commissioner of Police lead a team of officers to arrest these men for the branishing of a weapon and the treats that were made upon his officers. And all these money hungry lawyers that go beyond integrety to defend evil, damnation may follow you. To end my chrade to this topic, my dear Commissioner of Prison, those 52 inmates that were taken off of death row, I understand that there will be a new intake of Prison Officers soon, how will you put this to them, that when ever someone is committed of a crime they are not to be punished but therefore RESTORATED, so whenever this criminal for the murder of one of your comrade is ever capture and sent on restoration, what is the relif of justice for the officers' family, his co-workers, and yes the new recruits that may be inducted? You have a major role in this crime fighting initiative, so start to work.
Rap. Posted: 2008-08-26 09:13:00 AM
This just shows the stupidity and the ignorance of these people who are trying to mimmic whatthey are seeing on television and in movies. The difference is tha these movie stars are not breaking any laws and at the end of the day, they get to go home wit their millions of dollars and these fools that imitate them, get to spend their lives in prison. Get a job you morons!!!!
Murder Rap Posted: 2008-08-26 09:30:00 AM
So enacting legislation to ban lyrics endorsing violence will stop them? Really? The naivete betrayed by that suggestion is incredible. These are criminals, not law-abiding citizens. What the hell do they care about laws? There are laws banning murder, does that stop them? The spirit, mentality and mode of operation of Randolph Burroughs need to be invoked to deal with the crime situation. The reality is that the law and lawyers work more in favour of the rights of criminals than ordinary citizens. These criminals are being empowered by these two elements daily. What a pity!
degenerates! Posted: 2008-08-26 06:01:00 AM
Maybe these uneducated degenerates are getting away with enough publicity as it is. So I am just not sure that these lyrics should be posted on the Express. Regardless, this is a bold and brazen act (holding pistols and 'rapping' about harming our law enforcement officers in front of a Police Post. I only hope that these people can be identified quickly. COP? This is funny - watch how these little boys watch too much tv and aspire to be just like the folks in those North American 'rap' videos. No sense of reality at all!
Boasting on YouTube Posted: 2008-08-26 10:26:00 AM
Well since the police are just getting word about this, I just thought they, (and the general public) should know that there are SEVRAL videos on YouTube showing crimes like robberies and assaults being committed in Trinidad. Now do some police work and identify these criminals, cause you have the best evidence at your fingertips - VIDEO! I'm 3000 miles away and I feel like I'm doing the police work for you. Who do I see about getting on the payroll?
Lyrics Posted: 2008-08-26 10:33:00 AM
Ok I cannot believe the lyrics have been published and printed! You're glorifying this criminal even more - now he has his "work" (for lack of a better term) published in a national newspaper and online for all to see. Wow!

It is a pity that the same so-called ghetto that birthed "Spree" Simon, and the pan; that birthed calypso, limbo and all the other local art form we now enjoy; is now birthing such wasted talents. These talents needs to be harnessed into a pool that will overflow to the benefits of the nation as a whole. All these angry youths who are following the Jamaican ghetto art form just need to go back to our Trini art form and carry on the legacy left by the pioneers. What will be left for the pre-teens to inherit in five to ten years to come?. Music teachers, drama teachers start free classes in your community centers to tap into the raw unharnessed and indisciplined talents that are calling for avenue to vent.

Sensationalization at it's best. Posted: 2008-08-26 10:48:00 AM
This song is over a year old. it also isn't the only song that this guy sang. gangster rap is his artform, it may be seen as a negative genre, but all the Movado and 50 cent tunes that are so prevalent on the nations radios are alot worst. The only thing that differentiates him from them is that they have major recording contracts. personally, i am glad that this is how he is trying to get his message across rather than mugging or killing someone literally. It's time the newspapers give good news and stop making everything seem worse than it is.
Re: Sensationalization at it's best. Posted: 2008-08-26 2:02:00 PM
In my opinion you and those like you are an idiot. What kind of art form of music is gangster rap. Even that idiot 50 cents, Movado, all those idiots should never be allowed to be on the air. WHat kind of message are they sending. Be real and wake up this is not an expression of anything but anger, and total disrespect to the police the community, and most importantly themselves. It is people like YOU that sensationalize creeps and criminals like them.

a great article by Miss Renne however the COP and others should note that this video was posted almost two years ago. The term COCHO is used not Cudjoe, who was in fact a friend of The Rastafarian rapper.COCHO is a Guyanese slang for informer.Reminds you of NWA and 2-live-crew who popularize this years ago.

I must say that I am not at all surprised by that video, reason being that the horse has already bolted long ago from the stable. I have said over and over why is it that those immoral songs and acts performed by overseas artists (especially Jamaican) are allowed into Trinidad. The Government has a duty to protect the morals of the nation. No one would allow someone to enter his home and behave in an abominable manner. Likewise, the Government has to sift the stuff that is entering the country and make a decision to reject. Little Grenada has banned Passa Passa. Trinidad just seems to be allowing anything and everyone into the country to polute and further demoralise our Youth. We must remember that whatsover we sow, we will reap.

This just goes to show how bold these criminals are, they are not afaid of the law.Every time a murder happens it seems as though crimnals get more famous for every killing. These gangsters are making it clear that they are not afraid of the law or police officers, they are having fun and by making that music video they are boldly challenging the law and letting us know that they have no respect for us and they are not afraid us.

This is so sick, it is not funny. These young boys have nothing better to do with their lives but sing on killing and violence?! I guess we are going to blame the government for this too right? These individuals are lawless, demonic people. Sadly, it is in my opinion, that once the police identify who they are they need to be dealt with and not through any court or jury but by the same means they are depicting in this video! These people need to be rid of. They are polluting the society and are inciting unnecessary violence because they refuse to do anything else with their lives!!!

That's what Trinidad getting now. Letting these DEPORTED, CRIMINAL MONSTERS who is just in a human shell, enter our beautiful country without tagging them before. I hope the law enforcement are stepping up and identifying these hoodlums before "disaster" really strikes in TnT. GOD bless TnT.

I know there are many good, law abiding citizens in Laventille however, these lyrics shows the mentality of some. This joke should not even be publicise as this will only add to their ignorant attitude. I hope the police find these men!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

“NOT COMING HOME FOR CARNIVAL 2009.” Posted: 2008-08-26 2:29:00 PM
As you are all aware, Trinidad and Tobago has become a country with a very high incidence of murders, robberies, rape, assault, kidnapping, sexual assault, murders, and other various crimes. Many of us are appalled at the level of such horrific crime and of the level of crime that goes unsolved. However, this is not the main problem at hand. The main problem is the lack of the Government’s ability to curtail this problem. We all love and care deeply about our country and will do whatever we can to enjoy its beauty and hospitality. We return home in numbers every Carnival to enjoy ourselves and return to our respective countries abroad to boast of how beautiful our islands are. However, we seem to forget that even though the crime does not directly affect us, that our brothers, sisters, fathers, mothers, and other family members are affected daily. We seem to still consider our land paradise, while many children ages 3, 5, 7, 9, and as young as six-months old, are raped, buggered, and killed. We seem to forget the next day that another of our country men and women were killed by being shot 6, 7, 8, and as much as 18 times, mostly to their head. We seem to forget that in a country blessed with oil, natural gas, tourism, money, that people are dying everyday from dengue fever, aids, hepatitis, and generally a lack of proper health services. We all complain about how bad the situation is and that the Government is not doing anything. We all complain that the police is involved in the crime itself. Yes, maybe all this is true, but we never seem to be able to come up with a solution. Well let us start today to come together and create an environment where changes will have to be made. Our mission states that as our civic duty we all must come together and protest this callous way in which our country (Trini Paradise) is being destroyed. Our first protest action is to send a message that NO CARNIVAL is as important as the lives of children. We have decided to protest our Government’s lack of care for our country by “NOT COMING HOME FOR CARNIVAL 2009.” No more are we going to standby and allow Trinidad and Tobago to become infested with hate, murders, kidnapping, rape, and disease. Our mission today is to send a strong and loud message that we are tired and fed-up with the way our country is going. Send a message that we care not about tall buildings, when a need a hospital with beds. We care not about an aluminum smelter when the cost of food is causing many to go hungry. We care not about a Prime Ministers residence costing $200 million dollars when many are homeless. We care not about a private jet when a man is turned away from getting a visa and still has to pay the $800.00 fee to the American Embassy. We care not about Carnival when an all-inclusive costs as much as $1000.00. How can we enjoy Carnival when you have to leave before it gets dark? How can you truly enjoy Trinidad and Tobago when we return home, the generation we left kidnap us and rob us of our belonging? How can you tell me you enjoyed being home when you know Trinidad has so much money and still you see vagrants a hundred times more than when we were selling oil at $28.00 a barrel to the world? Please email this to everyone in your address books whether Trinidadian or not and sign our petition so that when the Government says that crime is not affecting tourism, they will see that it does. They will see that we as a people will not stand-by and allow them to play games with the lives of our brothers and sisters. One question I have to ask is; do you remember the days when you could go and visit a girlfriend or your man in Morvant or Diego Martin? Do you remember the days of shopping on Fredrick Street on a Saturday morning with music playing in the background? Do you remember going to Maracas Beach with friends and enjoying the day? What about the children in the yard playing marbles or flying kites? Can you remember the days of Atlantis Disco, Party-time, Fresh-Fest, and Morvant Savannah with Dr. Hyde, Star-Child, D’Professionals, Chinese Laundry, and Howie-T? Do you remember watching Break dancing on Fredrick Street on a Friday afternoon in front of Consort Mall? Well those days are gone; we were the last generation to enjoy the good ‘Ole days. Nevertheless, we must make a stand to save our forgotten generation and bring back some sense of belonging and happiness to our country for the sake of us all. Some say they will never return to Trinidad to live, I say even in death we shall Go to the site below and sign the petition. www.enoughisenough.com T rinbagonians Reacting In NumbersImmediately

Crime is crime, regardless of the form it comes in.Some will argue that these brainless cowards are exercising their Constitutional right-freedom of speech and expression-.This could have been a valid arguement,if these acts weren't being actually carried out, outside of this video. However, because the atmosphere,in our daily lives consist of this rancit behaviour, this type of freedom is not acceptable. This behaviour constitutes a breach of decent living and breaches the"Spirit and Letter of the Law".But selective enforcement should not be encouraged. Therefore it will be prudent, for the COP to balance his attack and focus on the politicians and white-collar actors, who also break the laws or facilitate any form criminal behaviour, without documenting it,in the same form as this video.Aubert Modeste.
