Last rites for Manning's barber

FAREWELL TO 'PEDRO': Prime Minister Patrick Manning sings a hymn during yesterday's funeral service for his barber Cyril 'Pedro' Villafana at the Lady of Perpetual Help RC Church yesterday on Harris Promenade, San Fernando. At left is San Fernando Mayor Kenneth Ferguson. -Photo: KRISHNA MAHARAJ

PRIME MINISTER Patrick Manning put aside state matters for a while to attend his barber's funeral yesterday.

Manning arrived at Our Lady of Perpetual Help RC Church on Harris Promenade, San Fernando, about half an hour before Cyril Villafana's body was wheeled into the church.

When Manning arrived he knelt and prayed and sat on the front pew, where he was greeted by fellow mourners. He fully participated in the hour-long service, singing along to the hymns, including "How Great Thou Art".

Speaking to reporters outside the church after the service, Manning said he last visited Villafana, also called Pedro, three weeks ago. He described his relationship with the 61-year-old Villafana as "close" and spoke of knowing him since 1962. Pedro started cutting Manning's hair 39 years ago, as Manning said it was when he (Manning) returned to the country in 1969 that he became a customer.

Described in the eulogy as one of the youngest barbers in South Trinidad in the 1960s, Villafana opened his own barber shop, "In Crowd Incorporation", in 1972. Villafana, it was said, never took holidays, as he was always there for his customers, including Manning. Members of the congregation said he worked until the day before his death.

A sign posted outside his Pointe-a-Pierre Road business place yesterday read: "Sorry, closed due to death of Pedro."

The service was also attended by San Fernando Mayor Kenneth Ferguson, Deputy Mayor Malaika Blair, Member of Parliament for San Fernando West Junia Regrello and former president of the OWTU Errol McLeod.

Manning said there were other barbers at the shop and he would continue to patronise the salon.

So many murders, so many flood victims, so many homeless children, so many kidnappings in this country. Did he ever visit any of these individuals? Did he ever make a public speech to console anyone ans assure them that the "gov`t cares" ?? So only because its only someone he knows will get his time away from travelling. WAKE UP T&T !!!!!!!

To the writer, do not let ignorance be your guide. I know that things are very difficult in Trinidad and Tobago, however; taking the time from your busy schedlue to pay respect to the passing of a dear friend and your personal barber (of many years) should not be an issue. Take a little time and reconsider. Trini in D/C.

On Monday night, while traveling back from New York City to D.C. from the Labor Day celebration, a friend of mine called and informed me of the passing of Pedro. I almost could not beleive what he was telling me. Then, I immediately recalled when growing up as a kid in San Fernando, there were times that I would need a hair cut and did not have the money to pay for it, I will walk into that Barber Shop on Point a Pierre Road and was never denied a hair cut from Pedro. I will also recall seeing him standing in the front of the Barber Shop smoking a cigarette. But, as I always say, NEVER QUESTION THE LORD, HE GIVETH LIFE AND TAKETH IT AWAY. That is why each day there is breath in our body, we should give thanks and praises to the Almighty Lord. Sadden.

It is so sad to see him go. We were in Trindad in July and it was so good to see him in good spirits. We brought our love from his good friend Desmond(Syo), now we have to extend our sympathy to his loved ones. All the best. Stay strong. From Desmond Andrews(Syo)and Family.
