Jones trains with Warriors

WELCOME RETURN: Trinidad and Tobago and Sunderland FC striker Kenwyne Jones, centre, tries to win the ball from Anthony Wolfe, second from right, during a national team training session at the Hasely Crawford Stadium yesterday. Jones rejoined the T&T squad for the first time since being injured in the June 1 friendly international against England, but he is not in the line-up for the two upcoming World Cup qualifiers as he is still recovering from the knee injury he sustained against the English visitors. -Photo: CURTIS CHASE

Trinidad and Tobago's Kenwyne Jones is back home to attend a family funeral.

The Sunderland striker, in the final stages of his rehab for a knee injury, was given permission to travel on Sunday and will stay in Trinidad until this weekend.

It has been agreed that Jones will train with the Trinidad and Tobago national squad as they prepare for Saturday's World Cup qualifier against Guatemala and the Black Cats have sent a club physio with the striker to assist his work.

Roy Keane, Sunderland's manager, confirmed: "There has been a death in his family and he has gone over with our best wishes.

"One of our medical staff has travelled with him, to make sure his recovery goes to plan, because every day is vital at this stage.

"Kenwyne will be back next weekend and hopefully, then, he will have a good week's training with the first team and after that he'll look for a reserve game."

Jones hurt his knee when playing for T&T in a friendly against England in June. He has pencilled in Sunderland's reserve game against Wigan later this month as a comeback date.

Sunderland's approach can only be professional, and it is in this case. Now our clubs must learn from this manner with dealing with their property(players).
