THE four Africans who were remanded into custody for tracing after being charged with entering Trinidad illegally could not be found yesterday.
When the matter was called before Magistrate Joanne O'Connor in the Princes Town First Court, police prosecutor Sergeant Colin Noel said he could offer no explanation for the men's absence.
Detective Corporal Michael Marshall of the Immigration Department left the courtroom to make enquiries.
On his return, Noel told the court illegal immigrants were usually taken to Maximum Security Prison but in this case the men-Jonas Agbodike and David Eleko from Nigeria and Joseph Kwarteng and Augustine Quao from Ghana-were taken to Golden Grove.
Noel said the men were not collected from this prison.
The men were charged with entering the country illegally and failing to report to an immigration officer after they were held at a beach at La Lune, Moruga on March 12.
They appeared in the court last Thursday and were remanded for tracing. They were supposed to be sentenced yesterday however, due to the jail mix-up, the matter was adjourned to today.
