DEFENDING First Citizens Primary schools champion Holy Name Prep of Port-of-Spain is expected to face tough competition in the fourth annual First Citizens Primary Schools Chess Championship.

They face Christian Primary Academy of Mausica, Arima who is looking to regain the title they lost last year when they go into battle on Sunday at Valpark Plaza, Valsayn.

The tournament has now developed into a clash between primary schools from east and west corridor, which is a good distance ahead of the south and central primary schools.

In the ‘west’ are Holy Name Prep, Maria Regina, Dunross and Richmond Street Boys’, while leading the charge form the ‘east’ are Christian Primary Academy, Arima Boys’ RC, and Tunapuna Boys’ RC. Holy Name Prep will once again be depending on national girl’s Under-12 champion Javanna Smith, her brother Zurich and Clyde Joseph.

Javanna is also the new national female junior champion while Maria Regina are looking forward to good performances again from Joshua Johnson, Luke Pounder and the Sirju sisters, national Grls’ Under-8 champion Stephanie and Dana. Christian Primary Academy have experience players Yanna Lopez, Rhea Eccles and national Girls Under-10 champion Jade Noreiga.

Arima Boys’ RC ( a former primary school champion) will depend heavily on Central and Caribbean (CAC) Under-10 gold medalist Ronnie Nelson, Xavier Bruce and Cordell Hernandez. Tunapuna Boys’ RC with Keno Sammul and Kelvin Mahabir, is not to be underestimated

The inter-school team Chess championships, sponsored by First Citizens Bank, is organised by TT Chess Academy and Promotions (TTCAP).

Players interested in participating can contact Bhisham Soondarsingh at 628-5068 or Andrew Bowles at 741-3982.
