East schools dominate b-ball

By WALTER ALIBEY Saturday, April 26 2008

ST AUGUSTINE Secondary Comprehensive School confirmed their dominance on the basketball courts in the Secondary Schools Basketball League (SSBL) when they defeated Queen’s Royal College (QRC) 77- 52 in the Under-20 Boys Champions of Champions Play-Offs at the Central Regional Indoor Auditorium.

The clash among the top Under-20 team in the East and North Zones saw Andel Cruickshank from the “Green Machine” as St Augustine are popularly called, score 17 points and his teammate Chris Nelson 16 in the win.

Ashton Demurrel was also among the top scorers for the easterners with 14 points while Michael Jerome got 13 points in the big victory. But it was QRC’s Shemuell Bartholomew who scored a game-high 19 points in his team’s losing effort.

The tournament basically showed a domination of the east schools over their northern compatriots.

Only the International School Port-of-Spain proved their worth by whipping Trinity East in the Boys Under-15 category and Barataria Junior Secondary in the Girls Open division.

Among the Under-15s Matthew Temple scored 26 points and Dominique Lawrence added 15 valuable points for the International School as they defeated Trinity College East 59-43 in a tough battle.

In the Open Girls category Renee Skeete topscored with ten points for Barataria but it did not stop the International School from winning 31- 27.

Meanwhile St Augustine Secondary Comprehensive later returned to the courts to beat a tough Mucurapo Secondary Comprehensive in the Boys Under-17 division of the Champions of Champions.

They got a whopping 36 points from Nelson to conquer “Compre” 72-69 in a close contest.

The Mucurapo boys got 14 points apiece from Keron Grazette and Elon Hernandez while Jakaya George topscored with 21 points in their losing effort.

In another game Barataria Junior Secondary also defeated Mucurapo Secondary School 31-11 in the Under-15 Girls play-off.
