AIMIGAYLE made a pleasing debut over fences when runner-up in a mares' only event at Fontwell earlier this month and she would not need to improve off that effort to go one better in today's Joslin Rowe Beginners' Chase over three miles at Kempton.
The bay mare, who was a bumper winner as well as being successful over timber the previous season, found only the useful Katess too good, when eight lengths adrift of that rival in a beginners' event (chase) over two-and-a-half miles at Fontwell 19 days ago.
Aimigayle jumped well in the main, though jumping out to her right at the fifth and final obstacles. She led shortly after the tapes were lifted until approaching two (fences) from home, when headed by Katess, keeping on in pleasing fashion if unable to match the eventual winner for pace on the level after clearing the last.
Previously, Sue Smith's charge had been a respectable third, beaten just over six lengths behind Irish Legend, in a Listed hurdles' event over 20 furlongs at Chepstow. As is her customary style, she set out to make all the running from flagfall.
And although Aimigayle surrendered pole position before three (flights) from the finish, she rallied gamely to regain the lead, briefly, racing between the final two flights before made to settle for a minor share in the 0-140 contest.
The Midnight Legend mare is being upped in distance to three miles, which ought to bring about further improvement as she has always looked the type likely to appreciate a greater test of stamina rather than the shorter trips over which she's been competing, when there is more of an emphasis on speed.
Meanwhile, later on in proceedings at the same Sunbury venue, the well-thought-of Boomshakalaka can get his chasing career back on track in the Ladbrokes Handicap Chase over an extended 20 furlongs, having appeared to have lost the plot somewhat during the latter half of last season.
Useful over hurdles, the Nick Henderson-trainee created a favourable impression when sent chasing, winning his first two starts at Kempton, before losing his unbeaten tag over fences when fourth in a competitive-looking handicap at Cheltenham.
The Seven Barrows inmate, in a return visit to Prestbury Park, was pulled up in the Listed Jewson Novices' Chase (20 1/2 furlongs) at the Festival, then suffering a similar fate (pulled up) at the Punchestown Festival (Ireland), on his final start last April.
Still relatively unexposed, Boomshakalaka is better judged on his earlier efforts last term. His master handler would have done some 'tweaking' over the off season to rectify whatever might have gone amiss in the latter part of the gelding's 2007-'08 campaign.
