Disabled want electricity subsidy

Wednesday, April 23 2008

THE Trinidad and Tobago Chapter of Disabled People International (TTDPI) is asking the Regulated Industries Commission (RIC) to be granted a subsidy or concession in light of the increase in electricity rates as of May 1.

The organisation made the request via a letter dated Monday April 21 and signed by its Secretary General William Naranjit on behalf of its acting President Michael Fraser and addressed to RIC chairman Dennis Pantin.

The letter stated the disabled are at a disadvantage as most of this community lives on public assistance from the State and cannot afford increases, in the cost of living and utility bills.

The National Executive of the TTDPI, stated in the letter that it: “has recognised that the decision by the Commission to allow for the increase in the utility bills has been taken without any consideration of the impact that these decisions would have on the disabled community.”
