Dead on Independence Square
'Man dies from heart attack'

HEART ATTACK VICTIM?: The unidentified man lies on the road on Independence Square after he collapsed and died yesterday. -Photo: Della Ann Stewart

Police are now seeking the public's help in identifying a man of African descent who suddenly collapsed and died on Independence Square, Port of Spain, just after noon yesterday.

Police suspect the man, who was dressed in a black jersey and jeans and appears to be in his late 50s, died from a heart attack.

Eyewitnesses said they saw the man "beating up" on the road moments after he collapsed and not long after blood was seen coming out of his eyes.

Dozens of people, part of the lunch time crowd on the hustle in the city, were shocked to see a man lying on Independence Square during the noon rush hour and immediately gathered around him.

Some people were seen making frantic calls on their cellphones to the Global Medical Response of Trinidad and Tobago (GMRTT) and were heard pleading for an ambulance.

Two police officers and two soldiers on foot patrol in the city quickly rushed over to the crowd on noticing the commotion and attempted to take control of the situation, ordering the crowd to step away from the man.

One of the officers, who checked the man's pulse began to apply CPR, but failed in his efforts to resuscitate him. He was however criticised by some onlookers who felt he was not doing the CPR right.

The man was declared dead by the police officers who covered the corpse with a sheet long before the ambulance arrived. Surprisingly when the ambulance finally arrived the attendants removed the sheet and began feeding him oxygen, while onlookers further criticised the officials for covering the man before the ambulance could arrive on the scene.

Onlookers were also inscenced by the tardy response of the ambulance, eyewitness said the ambulance arrived on the scene more than 20 minutes after they received the distress call.

One women said when she called the ambulance, someone told her that none was in at the time and they were waiting on one of the ambulance to return from Diego Martin.

Police officers said they found no kind of identification on the man's person, not even a wallet. Police said they could not say if he was robbed.

They are now pleading with anyone who may know him to come forward and claim him. The man's body is at the mortuary of the Port of Spain General Hospital.

Trinidad is suppose to going towards first world status, in what first world country you would hear they have no ambulance available. Come on Trinidad is time to buck up.
Where was the Ambulance!!!??? Posted: 2008-07-24 06:10:00 AM
Ladies and Gentlemen, With all the development taking place in T&T why don't we have a competent Emergency Response System. This is downtown Port of Spain not Matelot or Charlotteville. Where is our respect for human life, this could have been you, your father or your brother. Maybe we should hire another Englishman to find out why the system is corrupt or not working!
Death Posted: 2008-07-24 06:55:00 AM
Are the Police qualified to declare someone dead? I thought that only doctors can do that. I am assuming that the police officer was first aid trained. Then he should have known that one of the rules of a first aider is not to stop the assistance provided until someone of equal or better qualification takes over. And a first aider has no right to declare anyone dead.

Readying this kind of report just ecalated a migraine I suffered last night. What is wrong with these people? Waiting for an ambulance to return from Diego? Solidier/police cannot administer proper CPR. WOW!!!! Help us Lord. Trini in B'klyn.
20 minute ambulance Posted: 2008-07-24 04:18:00 AM
midday traffic in port of spain does not allow an ambulance to reach unless it could fly over traffic.trini drivers show no respect for emergency vehicles and this would most certainly have delayed its arrival.just another case of news people trying to sell their papers
CPR experts Posted: 2008-07-24 08:58:00 AM
Why didn't one of the CPR experts whp were criticising the police officer do the CPR? The officer was the only one willing to do it, and I suspect he was also the one best trained as CPR methods are continuously updated. Anyone trained in CPR more than two years ago needs a refresher and I am betting some of the critics learned everything they learned about CPR off the television or from a book and have no pratcical training at all. Too many critics and not enough cooks!
need more ambulance Posted: 2008-07-24 09:28:00 AM
i really donot know whats going on in trinidad shame on the ambulance service
What a shame Posted: 2008-07-24 06:51:00 AM
How sad is this? Instead of the bystanders helping the poor man, they just stood around him looking and when the medics arrived, they start criticizing them. It's quite distressing to think that we live in the country in which we find a dying man struggling for his life as entertainment.
Emergency skills Posted: 2008-07-24 11:31:00 AM
Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation skills should be given free to the public via red cross and employers so such situation may prevent further death in future.
2020 vision country need to get it together... Posted: 2008-07-24 11:59:00 AM
2020 vision country means procedures in place for just such emergencies ~ ambulance(s) notice I said ambulances in sufficient supply should be readily available, when you call for such an emergency, dispatch should be asking the right questions...is the person still breathing, how many ppl, exactly where, etc..so the dispatch can report the incident for the correct units to follow, i.e. fire appliance, police or ambulance or in some cases...ALL three. I pray the police staff is well trained in administering first aid (breathing, CPR, etc) I am still shocked at the fact that this happened in town and it took so long for an ambulance to respond.
Incorrect CPR Posted: 2008-07-24 12:20:00 AM
IF the onlookers were SO trained and certified to deem that CPR was being incorrectly performed, why didn't they jump in and perform it according to their up-to-date certified training???
Beating up in the street.....? Posted: 2008-07-24 08:29:00 AM
This is just one more glaring example of just how devalued human life has become in 'sweet' TnT. It is an absolute disgrace at how long it took for the 'emergency' response ambulance/team to arrive on the scene. If this happened in North America or Europe, heads would be rolling all now so. When are you people going to grow up and get your act together? Your country just keeps sinking further down into the cesspool of failure and you just don't seem to give a damn.

Trinidad is an oil producing country. Use your money to build hospitals and buy vehicles for ambulances and train people to care for the sick and injured. It's not all about carnival. Think of the jobs to be created, and last but first, try God. philly
