Beaches gradually returning to normal

Wednesday, March 26 2008

Lifeguards at Maracas and Las Cuevas Bay reported yesterday that things are returning to normal after a deep low pressure system originally from the North Atlantic resulted in rough seas and high swells around Trinidad and Tobago over the Easter weekend.

The Trinidad and Tobago Meteorological Service(TTMET) yesterday continued a rough seas bulletin, first issued last Wednesday, warning small craft operators, sea bathers and all marine interests of the conditions, which included waves over three metres in height.

Augustus Sylvester, President of Lifeguard Arm of the National Union for Government and Federated Workers, (NUGFW) and Patrol Captain at Las Cuevas, told Newsday yesterday that water conditions are gradually improving despite strong current.

A lifeguard at Maracas said conditions have considerably improved. “We have a few rip currents, but the water is much better to bathe in,” he added.

By midday, fishermen at the Maracas fishing village ventured out to sea after remaining on shore for five days. “We were going to go out yesterday (Sunday) but we decided against that. Everyone though is getting ready to go out today,” fisherman Terry Joseph told Newsday yesterday.
