Two schools continue to report low attendance among students and teachers because the institutions are either in disrepair or unsanitary conditions.

Students and teachers at the Aranjuez Government Primary School continued to stay away from classes yesterday because of a sewer leak and pigeon infestation which have been plaguing the school for the past few weeks.

And yesterday a Ministry of Education official was greeted by bats, rats and cockroaches during a tour of the Kanhai Presbyterian School, Barrackpore. At Aranjuez Government Primary, Parent Teacher Association (PTA) president Edward Reid said although the school accommodates 200 students and 12 teachers, few students and teachers turned up for classes on Monday and yesterday. He explained that for the past few weeks classes have been disrupted because of pigeon droppings.

“There are now nests and eggs in the classrooms which were made during the vacation period,” said Reid.

Reid said the San Juan/Laventille Regional Corporation began repair work on the sewer line on the playing field.

At Kanhai Presbyterian, the PTA’s public relations officer Krishna Putkoo, said yesterday’s visit by a Schools Supervisor II followed one conducted by two Schools’ Supervisors I on Monday.

Putkoo, who accompanied the official during the tour, said the rodents were found hiding in the storeroom. He said the official was also shown the cracks in the retaining wall and the tanks used to store water which was not equipped with a filtering system.

Meanwhile, classes at St Joseph’s Boys’ RC Primary School resumed yesterday. The school had been closed to facilitate electrical repairs.
