Absent cop finally shows up in court

HAD police officer Vidja Harripersad not appeared in court on Friday, the matter in which an attorney obstructed the police in the execution of their duties would have been dismissed.

PC Harripersad, who charged attorney Wilston Campbell for obstruction while his car was being wrecked by police, gave evidence in a San Fernando Court. Harripersad had failed to appear on the last three occasions the matter was called.

Testifying before Magistrate Melvin Daniel, Harripersad said Campbell obstructed him in his duties by refusing to exit his car which was about to be towed on Lower High Street, San Fernando, on July 29.

Harripersad gave evidence that the white Nissan B13 car was parked on the left side of the road where there were several 'No Parking' signs. He said he asked, without success, about the whereabouts of the driver of the car before they began wrecking it. They were about to drivel off, Harripersad said, but were hindered by traffic. He said he then realised a man, whom he identified to the San Fernando Second Magistrate's Court as being Campbell, was sitting in the driver's seat of the car. He asked him to exit the vehicle but Campbell refused, rolled up the glass and locked the door.

He said he later arrested him and charged him for obstructing a police officer in the execution of his duties. The matter was adjourned to October 10.
